The role of mobile devices in classrooms

We need to consider many issues when bringing in mobile devices such as iPads. First, students should be the center of our work, so we need to consider students needs. They want to see relevance in the classroom activities. iPads and apps can bring real world to the classroom. Or students can bring iPad to a field trip and document their learning. Second, we should use best practices and learning theories when using iPads. A few examples are (a) encourage student interaction, (b) pay attention to students' learning styles (visual, verbal, kinesthetic, etc.), (c) group work and collaboration (based on social constructivism), (d) allow student choices (based on motivation theory), and so on. Another consideration is the affordances and limitations of mobile devices. They are small and easy to carry around, but it is sometimes hard to type and manipulate objects on the screen. The price tag is another issue, and some schools and families do not have money for all the apps and devices. This can create a digital divide between those who have and those who have no mobile devices. In sum, I think mobile devices have a role in education. Educators need to consider a broad range of issues when integrating such technology in curriculum.
